Carl goes to Italy

(Created 2002-09-21)

After my great trip to London, I felt that I wanted to see more of the world. Italy is nice, and at a good distance from home. But this is more of an adventure. We started in the south of Italy, and travelled with train to the north.

This is my version of the trip :-) All these pictures are taken with a digital camera. My dad insists on using a traditional camera with film that needs to be developed. Takes ages...

We didn't find any direct flights to Napoli, so we had to stop in Paris to change plane. Here I am with mom in front of the Air France plane. The toys I got on Air France were really nice. And the crew didn't question my age, as they did on SAS... So everyone was happy!

We took an Alitalia flight to Napoli. Here I am again outside the plane.

They had also good toys, and a nice crew!

From Napoli, we took the train to Diamante, in south. It took five hours, and we arrived really late. Diamante is a small village in Calabria, and we couldn't find a taxi at the station, but somehow it all worked fine.

We started early on the Saturday morning. Harald and Renate, our friends from Germany picked us up at the hotel to show us Diamante. (This couple on the picture are not Harald and Renate.) This shop sold almost nothing else than chile pepper stuff. Dad was in heaven :-)
And the door...
I didn't tell you. There was a Peperoncino festival that week in Diamante. Here are one of the posters.
Almost all shops had chile peppers!
I mean it! They are serious chile heads in Diamante :-)

We went to a local grocery market. Check out the colour on those tomatoes! Looks great!

Dad bought a ristra with local peppers, but it didn't survive the trip...

Even the shoe store used peppers in the decoration...
A local pepper from Calabria.
And the clothes store had peppers in the window... Isn't it amazing?
Even the signs on the streets were as peppers.
They say peppers are "The poor man's viagra". Well, I'm too young for this...
This was in the hair dresser window. Beautiful!
All these peppers made me thirsty. But I'm still on a milk diet, so I ate the plastic cup instead. Yummy!
The sunset in Diamante was great!
This is where we had a coffee. Look at the pepper tree :-)
The festival started in the evening. These guys are just heating up!
I wanted to tasted the pepper ice cream. Maybe Dad will make that one evening. I hope!
Massimo from the "Accademia del Peperoncino" had grewn several hundred varieties of peppers this year. My Dad got some fruits and guess if he was happy...
Finally a picture of someone I know. Renate, Harald, Grandmother and Dad.
Guess if it was nice to go home and rest that night. Phew! I heard mom and dad call this vacation. Well, I don't know...
Breakfast. But where is the food? I ate the table cloth instead! Yum!
